Pipe protection

Northumbrian Water is advising customers on the importance of preventing burst pipes around the home during periods of cold weather.

Knowing where the internal stoptap is and how it works, and insulating pipes and tanks to help prevent freezing are two important hints.

John McGovern, Distribution Manager for Northumbrian Water, said: “It is very important that everyone is aware of how they can protect their pipes in homes and buildings during periods of cold weather.  Pipes can freeze and then burst, particularly those which are left unprotected in cold rooms, or are in empty properties which still have a water supply.

“We are not responsible for pipes within a customers home, but we feel it is very important that everyone should be aware of how they can protect themselves from unnecessary problems due to bursts. Burst pipes waste water.  However, the most important reason for taking precautions is to prevent the devastating impact bursts can have on buildings and their contents.”

Tips to prevent burst pipes:
Lag and insulate pipes, tanks and cisterns to help prevent freezing.
Know where the internal stoptap is and check it works.
During very cold periods allow heat into the loft area and other unheated areas where there are water pipes and fittings.
Replace washers on dripping taps.
Do not thaw out pipes with blowlamps or naked flames!

If a pipe does burst in your home:
Turn off the internal stoptap and open all of the taps to drain the system.
Turn off central heating.
Call a reputable plumber immediately.
