Scheme details to improve bathing waters off the Cleveland Coast have been finalised.
The decision has been taken after extensive consultation with residents, Redcar and Cleveland Council and community groups.
Northumbrian Water will install two new underground storage tanks, at a cost of more than £6 million, which will hold excess storm water that is currently discharged directly into the sea at Redcar during periods of heavy rainfall.
One storage tank is to be located under The Stray, between the roundabout on the Coast Road and the existing pumping station in Zetland Park, and the other tank is to be located in the grounds of Redcar and Cleveland College.
The scheme, which will begin in June and be complete by Spring next year, will provide additional storm protection to the sewer network in Redcar. The improvement work will also have a positive impact on bathing water quality and ensure standards consistently comply with European legislation.
In addition to this work Northumbrian Water has also offered to try and help identify the possible cause of flooding in Zetland Park. Once identified, the company will then work with the council to find a possible solution.
During the course of the work Northumbrian Water will do all it can to keep disruption to a minimum. Anyone wanting further information should ring the Customer Contact Centre on 08457 171100.
