We are proud to provide a sustainable, affordable, clean and safe water supply and to manage and treat the waste water returned to us in a way that protects the environment.
Water may be plentiful in our region but it is still a precious resource that has to be taken from the natural environment, highly treated, delivered to the places where we want to use it and cleaned again afterwards. This uses significant amounts of energy and chemicals, which add to global warming. The growth in population and our modern lifestyles with increased use of washing machines, dishwashers, power showers, baths and garden sprinklers mean our demand for water is increasing and therefore more is having to be taken from the natural environment and more energy and chemicals are being used.
To ensure a happy balance is met between the needs of the environment around us and our own water consumption needs it is important that we make the most of the water we use and do not waste it unnecessarily. After all if we waste water we may contribute to climate change.
You might be surprised to learn that, in just one hour, a garden sprinkler can use almost as much water as a family of four uses in one day (600 litres). And, a dripping tap can waste over half a litre every ten minutes whilst a new washer to fix it will only cost a few pence.
Using less water is simple, just think about how precious water is when you turn on the tap or flush the toilet.
