Newcastle Eagles Hoops for health programme

Northumbrian Water continues to sponsor the Newcastle Eagles Hoops for Health healthy living schools programme. This programme has now reached over 60,000 children and continues to go from strength to strength. The programme is delivered by the players themselves who build up amazing rapport with the kids who are completely mesmerized by the sheer size of the players.

The programme focuses on healthy eating, drinking water, smoking cessation, fitness and an introduction to basketball covering a whole afternoon in a school. This is then followed up with additional coaching, regional tournaments and results in a tournament final.

There is an opportunity for any of the school children who demonstrate an interest in the sport to develop further through a central venue league and Amy Herring is one example of this;

Amy was introduced to basketball through the Hoops for Health scheme when the programme visited her primary school. She enjoyed the short taste of basketball that the Eagles offered her so much she went along and joined her local basketball club, Ryton Ryder’s, a club run by the Eagles Community Foundation. This led Amy into participation basketball and then competitive basketball through the Central Venue League, Amy competed alongside boys in the mixed team through the under 12’s set up and continues to compete in the under 14’s league. But Amy did not stop there, in September 2008 when through her club she found out about School of Excellence trials for the first Newcastle Eagles girls National League team Amy jumped at the chance to trial. Amy was successful in this endeavour and became part of the Newcastle Eagles Girls’ School of Excellence under 14’s squad. Amy’s whole family are now involved in the sport with them attending all the Newcastle Eagles matches.

The Newcastle Eagles team are current BBL league champions and are now in their 12th season at the Metro Radio Arena.

If this wasn't enough, basketball clinics were run last season, which offered schools / organisations (up to 150 people) to coach with the team for two hours prior to their main match on the court at the arena, Northumbrian Water were pleased to support this exciting new initiative.
