Environmental information regulations

Northumbrian Water prides itself on operating with a high degree of openness.  We publish a great deal of information about our environmental policies and the impact of the business on the environment.

The Environmental Information Regulations introduce a new legal right to access environmental information.  From January 2005, we must respond to requests for environmental information within 20 days.  If the company holds the information requested, and this is not covered by any of the exemptions, then the information must be provided.

In many cases we will be able to do this by providing copies of company literature or referring the person making the request to our website.  No charge will be made for this.

However, if Northumbrian Water incurs costs in collating the information required, appropriate charges will apply.  We will provide you with estimates of any charges in advance.  For further information on charges please download the Environmental Information Regulations Charging Policy.

An issue has arisen over whether Northumbrian Water is a public authority for the purpose of the Environmental Information Regulations.  This is currently under review, but in the meantime we are willing to consider requests for environmental information on a voluntary basis.  If you would like us to consider a request for information please either fill in the online environmental information request form or download a copy of the request form and send it back to the address provided.

Further information on the environmental information regulations can be found on the Information Commissioner's website at http://www.ico.gov.uk/what_we_cover/environmental_information_regulation.aspx
