Site tours

We have a number of sites that are open for visits. They are;

Water treatment works

Whittle Dene water treatment works, west of Newcastle
Wear Valley water treatment works, near Stanhope, Co Durham
Lumley water treatment works, Chester le Street
Warkworth water treatment works, Warkworth, Northumberland

Sewage treatment works

Birtley sewage treatment works, near Team Valley
Tudhoe sewage treatment works, Spennymoor
Hendon sewage treatment works, Sunderland
Amble sewage treatment works, Amble, Northumberland
Bran Sands, Teesside (available for older students, years 10 upwards, only)

As these are working sites we have some very strict guidelines.

If your party contains children, then we require a supervisory ratio of one adult per ten children aged eleven years and over, one adult per five children aged eleven years and under.  The maximum size of each party of school children is limited to 30 children plus their adult supervisors. The maximum size for a party of adults is 30.

• We only allow pupils from Year 5 upwards on to sites.
• We can only allow one visit per site per month so it may not always be possible to accommodate your visit.
• No cameras, videos or mobile phones will be allowed on site.
• We must have at least six weeks notice of when you may like to have a visit. 
• We retain the right to cancel visits at any time due to operational emergencies.
