Optional metering

Do you want to make savings on your water bill?

Installing a meter can reduce water usage and could save you money.

Paying for what you use also means that less water is wasted which helps conserve valuable water resources.

And that's good news for the environment.

The benefits of having a meter include:

• You pay for the water you use - after you've used it.
• There's a free survey (where we discuss the right location for the meter).
• Free installation (in most cases).
• You can pay on our monthly budget scheme (by direct debit or other instalment options).
• There are Government regulations to protect you if you receive certain benefits or tax credits and live in a property with a water meter.  You must also have either three or more children up to 19 years old in full time education who live with you or someone in your household who has a medical condition which means they use a lot of water.  If this applies to you, you do not have to pay more than the average household bill.  Please call our Customer Centre on 0845 733 5566 and ask for details.

Selective metering

It is our policy to meter the following types of domestic property:

All new properties.

And

Properties where water is used in significant quantities, including:

• For garden watering, other than by hand-held apparatus. This includes the use of sprinklers.
• For the automatic replenishing of ponds or swimming pools with a capacity greater than 10,000 litres.

Unmetered bills will draw customers attention to this, and you will be required to notify Northumbrian Water if you are using water for any of these purposes. Arrangements will be then made to fit a meter at no cost to you.

We may also require domestic properties to be metered following a change in occupancy.
