The 18th annual County Durham Environment Awards will be launched on Friday 15 December in the surroundings of the new Rivergreen Centre, Aykley Heads, Durham. Local Community Groups, Parish Councils, Environmental bodies and local interest groups as well as local professionals and Elected Members have been invited to attend to gain an understanding of what provides for a successful scheme and the importance these schemes can make to the natural and built environment of the County. Rivergreen has already won extensive praise in the sustainability field and was recently entered for a national Civic Trust Award.
The principle objective of the scheme is to encourage good design and sustainable principles in all aspects of the built and natural environment. In addition it aims to promote the care of the environment through sensitive schemes that conserve and enhance natural features and demonstrate good guardianship. Sponsorship for the seven categories is provided by NEDL, English Heritage, Carbon Trust, Premier, Cumbrian Industrials Ltd, Service Direct and Northumbrian Water.
The seven categories include:
