How to check for leaks

You can check for leakage by taking your own meter readings.

First you will need to locate your meter - find out about reading your meter.

Once you have read the meter make a note of the reading.

Shut off all taps and the internal stop tap - this is often located under the kitchen sink or in a connecting garage. Then check that no water comes out of the kitchen cold tap - you may need to let it run for a few minutes before it stops. If the water continues to flow then you have not fully shut off the internal stop tap or it is faulty and needs replacing.

When a leak is small it is very difficult to detect. You should ensure that you leave a reasonable amount of time before taking another reading. A good time to do this test is in the evening before going to bed. You can then take a second  reading the following morning before reopening the internal stop tap.

If the second reading is different to the first you may have a leak.
