Northumbrian Water is pleased to report that work is now complete on the £1.3 million flood protection scheme in Gilesgate.

Sunderland Road re-opened to motorists at 12 noon on Thursday 16 December 2010. Diversions that were in place via Dragon Lane and Sherburn Road have been removed. Normal bus services have resumed along Sunderland Road.

Durham County Council will carry out final road resurfacing to Sunderland Road in the New Year.

Northumbrian Water would like to thank residents, motorists and customers for their patience during this essential work, which will protect 15 properties from flooding on Marshall Terrace, The Moorlands, Musgrave Gardens, Peel Avenue and St Hild’s College CE Primary School on Renny’s Lane.

Protecting customers from flooding in Gilesgate

Northumbrian Water is committed to providing a high quality of service to its customers throughout the region and is investing hundreds of millions of pounds to upgrade the sewerage network and further improve the environment.

As part of this investment our contractors, Lumsden & Carroll Construction Limited, will be carrying out essential work to upgrade the sewerage network in Gilesgate.

The scheme, which will reduce the risk of flooding to St Hild’s Primary School and to 12 properties on Marshall Terrace, The Moorlands and Peel Avenue, will begin on Tuesday 1 June 2010 and take up to seven months to complete.

Customers are invited to find out more about the work and raise any questions or concerns they may have at a customer information session we are holding on Thursday 13 May 2010 at Belmont Community Centre, Sunderland Road, Durham, DH1 2LL, between 3.00pm and 8.00pm.

The work will involve upsizing 750 metres of sewer pipe at Sunderland Road and Mill Lane, and building a storm water storage sewer under the driveway of St Hild’s Primary School. Please find below a leaflet giving you further information and advice.

The problem

In times of extremely heavy rainfall the amount of water entering the sewerage network has resulted in flooding to 15 properties on Marshall Terrace, The Moorlands, Musgrave Gardens, Peel Avenue and St Hild’s College CE Primary School on Renny’s Lane.

The solution

Work to upgrade the sewerage network will begin on Tuesday 1 June 2010 and take up to six months to complete.  We are investing £1.3 million to upsize 750 metres of sewer pipe at Sunderland Road, Mill Lane and in the driveway of St Hild’s College CE Primary School.  This will provide an additional 900,000 litres of storm water storage in times of heavy rainfall, that’s 11,250 bathfulls!

How the work may affect you

During the course of the work it will be necessary to have temporary traffic management in place, see timetable below. Please note that the dates may change. Construction traffic will access work sites and our compound, in the school field at St Hild’s College CE Primary School. Please be reassured that, through careful planning with Durham County Council, we will do everything to keep disruption to a minimum.
