For restaurants, cafes and bars

Starting on World Water Day, Saturday 22 March 2008 Northumbrian Water is promoting the Drink tap - save lives! campaign throughout the North East, to raise vital funds for our adopted charity, WaterAid (registered charity number 288701).

We need YOUR help to make this life-saving campaign a success.

The idea is simple.  You provide free tap water when patrons ask for it and encourage them to make a donation to WaterAid for the water they receive.

By suggesting customers make a donation for the tap water they have requested and enabling them to do this, you can raise awareness about problems caused by a lack of safe water and sanitation, as well as raise vital funds to help WaterAid overcome poverty in the world’s poorest communities.

We will provide you with publicity materials (table cards, posters) to help you promote the initiative to your patrons, and illustrations of what different amounts of money can buy, but we will leave it to your patrons to decide how much to donate.

We invite you to participate for as long or as little as you like - a day, a week, a month or more.

At the end of your involvement in the campaign, you send us the total you’ve raised and we will forward it to WaterAid.  100% of donations raised will go to WaterAid.

What you will get out of your involvement

• The opportunity for positive publicity - we expect to generate a lot of local and regional media interest both before and after the campaign
• Projection of a positive image to staff, customers and suppliers
• The opportunity to motivate and engage staff, and the potential to increase teamwork and loyalty
• Very little start up time and no cost involved
• Differentiation of your service in a competitive market place
• Acknowledgment of your support that can be communicated to your staff and customers
• Support and promotional material from Northumbrian Water’s Corporate Affairs Department

What different amounts of money can achieve

Here are some illustrations of what could be achieved with the money raised through the campaign:

• £1.10 could pay for a tap in Pakistan used by approximately 40 people
• £3 could pay for a latrine cover slab used by a family of up to seven people in Nepal
• £15 could provide one person with a lasting supply of clean, safe water
• £30 could pay for one month’s salary for a hygiene educator in Bangladesh, who can deliver hygiene education to 200 families living in slums
• £125 could pay for the construction of six hygienic latrines in Zambia
• £350 could support a school sanitation block for 150 boys and girls in India
• £460 could pay for two public water points used by 500 people in Ethiopia
• £1,500 could pay to install a well in the south of Madagascar used by 500 people £4,000 could pay for a community-wide hygiene and sanitation training benefiting 1,000 people in Tanzania
• £5,000 could pay to site and drill a borehole which provides safe, clean water to 500 people in Ghana
