We are proud to provide a sustainable, affordable, clean and safe water supply and to manage and treat the waste water returned to us in a way that protects the environment.

Our region

Northumbrian Water operates in the North-east of England providing water and sewerage services to over 2.6 million customers.  We cover an area from the Scottish border southwards to North Yorkshire and westwards into Cumbria.

We have twenty two reservoirs ranging in size from the largest man-made reservoir in north-west Europe, Kielder Water, to the smallest ones like Hisehope and Smiddy Shaw located on Muggleswick Common in County Durham.  Some of our reservoirs form an important component of rare habitats like the upland limestone around Cow Green, home to a rare snail and amazing plants like the Spring Gentian and Teesdale Violet.  Due to improvements in our treatment processes and distribution systems there are a number of sites that are no longer in active use – such as Tunstall, Scaling Dam and Lockwood Beck.  These sites are however still retained and managed for recreational and wildlife interests.

This section has a map that allows you to explore our sites in more detail and there are suggested walks of varying lengths for everyone to enjoy.  In particular a new 27 mile multi-user trail has recently been constructed at Kielder and Bakethin Reservoirs which is accessible for both disabled and able bodied people with the option to join the trail at different points by using the ferry service.
