Conservation

Northumbrian Water has a strong commitment to conservation; our core interests lie in the sustainable management of our operational sites to maintain or increase biodiversity and reduce our company’s impact on the environment.

Some of our sites also have special designations such as Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), Special Protection Areas (SPAs) or Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) reflecting their wildlife importance on a national and international scale.  We also have a number of non-designated sites with unique or rare animals and plants that require special attention and management and you can find out more about these in other sections of our website.

Working in partnership with a variety of external organisations helps us deliver biodiversity objectives not just on our landholdings but throughout our operational area within the north-east of England.  Our catchment management projects are a good example where we are working with other stakeholders to not only improve biodiversity but also to try and achieve a more consistent level of raw water quality.

Links to these organisations, such as Natural England, the RSPB, and the Wildlife Trusts can be found throughout this section of the website alongside information on the public access and recreational opportunities available at our sites.
